Susan K. Stevens was born in Liverpool in 1963. She was educated at Liverpool Girls College before studying Fine Art and History at Liverpool Institute of Higher Education. In 1998, she returned to education, attending Goldsmiths College, London, where she gained a Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Art Psychotherapy.

Stevens’ paintings explore a recurring visual sense of isolation, creating spaces in which the viewer can bring their own sense of time and place. She deliberately titles her paintings in a way that allows freedom of interpretation, inviting each viewer to make the work their own, whether it suggests a landscape, seascape or still life.

Her practice is deeply intuitive and personal. She paints from feeling, with memory and emotion informing the development and final form of each work. Stevens aims to create paintings that are distinctive and instinctive, retaining a rawness that is genuine, honest and never contrived.
