Lleucu Anwyl is an illustrator, ceramicist, and designer-maker from Llanwst, Wales. Her graduate collection, Straeon at Central Saint Martins, was selected for the university's Archives and Collections alongside alumni such as Vivienne Westwood and Anthony Gormley. Rooted in storytelling, the project explored the narratives behind Welsh place names, evolving into a series of monochrome ceramics that preserve and celebrate traditional folk tales.
Since graduating, Lleucu's practice has expanded across multiple disciplines, including printmaking, ceramic ornamentation, and handcrafted objects. Her ongoing Matchbox series develops from her award-winning Straeon collection. Each piece features tarot-inspired illustrations of Welsh characters, sayings, and landscapes.
Hand-built and kiln-fired in her home studio, every matchbox is carefully hand-painted with glaze to debict figures such as "Y Gweithiwr - The Worker" and "Yr Hogyn Bach - The Little Boy". Lleucu's work is guided by the belief that art should be both cherished and used, creating tactile objects that invite interaction as well as admiration.
